Dear Colleagues!

On behalf of the program committee, I am pleased to invite you to take part in the Enhanced Oil Recovery Workshop, dedicated to EOR methods, which will be held on May, 2027, in Aktau, Kazakhstan.

The goal is to jointly discuss technological challenges and develop effective solutions for enhancing oil recovery from mature fields.

The event will be attended by representatives of relevant Ministries, the National Oil & Gas company «KazMunaiGas» and its subsidiaries, field operators from the entire Caspian Region (Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and others), research institutes, universities, equipment and chemical suppliers, holders of licensed technologies, and leading global experts in EOR.

Through expert lectures, joint discussions, and breakout sessions, we aim to develop practical solutions and lay the foundation for the sustainable development of the oil and gas industry.
Dr. Marat Sagyndikov
Program Chairperson
The relevance of this Workshop is driven by the growing importance of mature-field development for Kazakhstan’s oil and gas industry. A significant share of the country’s oil production comes from mature fields, many of which are characterized by natural production decline, increasing water cut, and a growing share of hard-to-recover remaining reserves. According to Energy Analytics, production from mature oilfields in Kazakhstan was estimated at around 30 million tons in 2024, representing approximately 34% of the country’s total oil production, and may decline to 10 million tons by 2050 without systematic measures aimed at improving recovery efficiency. For example, in the Kyzylorda region alone, production volumes have decreased by almost three times, or 65%, over the past 10 years.
Mangystau region is one of Kazakhstan’s key oil-producing regions: in 2025, Kazakhstan’s total oil and gas condensate production reached 99.4 million tons, while Mangystau Region accounted for 17.2% of national output, or approximately 17.1 million tons. For scale, this volume is equivalent to nearly 57% of the estimated annual production from Kazakhstan’s mature oilfields. This highlights the strategic importance of Mangystau region for the national mature-field agenda and makes Aktau a highly relevant location for professional discussion on EOR technologies.
In Kazakhstan, EOR technologies are currently at an active stage of development. The first pilot projects involving chemical EOR methods were implemented around ten years ago at the Kalamkas, Zaburunye, Nuraly, East Moldabek and other fields. In 2025-2026, pilot testing of chemical EOR was also initiated at the Uzen and Karazhanbas fields.
Despite this positive experience and support from oil companies and government authorities, the current pace of EOR deployment remains insufficient to achieve a significant industry-wide impact. Further scale-up requires adapted technological solutions that take into account Kazakhstan’s specific reservoir conditions (including high formation-water salinity, temperature, heterogeneity, and natural fracturing), marketing and regulatory requirements. Therefore, systematic research, technology screening and field-oriented knowledge exchange are essential for the effective implementation of EOR in Kazakhstan’s mature fields.
