Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is becoming increasingly important for Kazakhstan’s oil and gas industry due to the growing role of mature fields in the country’s production structure. A significant share of Kazakhstan’s oil output is currently produced from mature fields, many of which are facing natural production decline, increasing water cut, and rising operating costs.
Approximately one third of the country’s oil production comes from mature fields. According to expert estimates, current annual production from Kazakhstan’s mature fields, which amounts to around 30 million tons, could decline to approximately 10 million tons by 2050 unless systematic measures are taken to improve recovery efficiency.
This trend is already visible in several oil-producing regions. For example, in the Kyzylorda region, oil production has decreased by around three times over the past 10 years. This demonstrates the urgency of implementing technologies and approaches aimed at slowing production decline, improving reservoir performance, and increasing the recovery factor.
The Mangystau region is of particular strategic importance in the mature-field agenda. As one of Kazakhstan’s key oil-producing regions, it accounted for approximately 17.1 million tons in 2025, or around 57% of total production from all mature fields in the country.
In Kazakhstan, EOR technologies are currently at an active stage of development. Pilot tests of chemical EOR have been conducted since 2014 and have been implemented at the Kalamkas, Zaburunye, Nuraly, East Moldabek, and other fields. In 2025–2026, pilot testing of polymer flooding was initiated at the Uzen and Karazhanbas fields.
Despite the positive experience gained through pilot projects and the support of oil companies and government authorities, the current pace of EOR deployment remains insufficient to achieve a significant industry-wide impact. Further progress requires the scale-up of proven technologies and the adaptation of EOR solutions to Kazakhstan’s specific reservoir conditions, including high formation-water salinity, elevated temperatures, reservoir heterogeneity, and fracturing.
The effective implementation of EOR in Kazakhstan also requires a systematic approach that combines field experience, scientific research, technological adaptation, economic assessment, and regulatory support. Cooperation between field operators, research institutes, universities, technology providers, equipment and chemical suppliers, and government authorities is essential for developing practical solutions that can be applied at mature fields.
